Indonesia bans sale of iPhone 16, Chinese mobile phone brand seizes Indonesian market
Release time:2025-02-06 Source: Qingqiao Number of views:

In today's increasingly competitive smartphone market, a decision by the Indonesian government has attracted widespread attention. Due to the fact that the iPhone 16 produced by Apple Inc. in the United States failed to meet the Indonesian government's requirement for "Product Certification of Origin" (TKDN), which requires at least 40% of the components of the smartphone to be manufactured locally in Indonesia, the sale of this phone has been banned by Indonesian authorities. This decision not only puts Apple in an awkward position, but also provides a rare market opportunity for Chinese mobile phone brands.

It is reported that in order to lift the ban, Apple's Vice President of Global Policy, Aiman, personally went to Jakarta for multiple rounds of negotiations with the Indonesian government. Apple has promised to invest $1 billion to establish a factory in Batam, Indonesia to produce AirTag. However, this investment plan did not impress the Indonesian government. Indonesian Industry Minister Agus has made it clear that since AirTag is not a locally produced part of the iPhone, this investment is not sufficient to justify lifting the ban.

Amidst the deadlock in negotiations between Apple and the Indonesian government, Chinese smartphone brand Honor has keenly seized the market opportunity. Honor announced its official entry into the Indonesian market, planning to open over 10 brand experience stores within the first year and launch nearly 30 products including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and wearable devices. This move by Honor is undoubtedly a powerful impact on the Indonesian market and demonstrates the strong strength of Chinese mobile phone brands in overseas markets.

The Indonesian market has responded enthusiastically to Honor's entry. Many consumers have expressed their recognition of the quality and cost-effectiveness of Chinese mobile phone brands, and look forward to Honor bringing more innovation and choices to the Indonesian market. Honor also stated that it will actively respond to the localization production requirements proposed by the Indonesian government, strengthen cooperation with local Indonesian enterprises, and jointly promote the development of the Indonesian smartphone industry.

At the same time, economist Ferras from the Indonesian Institute of Economic and Financial Development (INDEF) also expressed optimism about Honor's entry into the Indonesian market. He believes that the ban on iPhone 16 will provide more market space for Chinese mobile phone brands, especially well-known brands like Honor. Ferras pointed out that Chinese mobile phone brands have already occupied a dominant position in the Indonesian market, and the addition of Honor will further consolidate this position and promote the diversified development of the Indonesian smartphone market.

In addition to Honor, other Chinese mobile phone brands are also actively seeking expansion opportunities in the Indonesian market. According to market research firm Canalys, the top three smartphone sales in Indonesia in the third quarter of last year were Chinese brands OPPO, Xiaomi, and Transsion. These brands have gained widespread recognition and praise in the Indonesian market due to their excellent product quality and strong brand influence.
